Examples Of Social Stratification In The Outsiders
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, the author depicts a story about a young boy named Ponyboy, finding out the rights and wrongs in society and the struggle to survive. S.E Hinton brings up the meat and potatoes of the novel, that is social mobility. According to Dictionary.com social mobility is defined as ââ¬Å" the movement of individuals, families, households, or other categories of people within or between layers or tiers in an open system of social stratification. Open stratification systems are those in which at least some value is given to achieved status characteristics in a society.â⬠Three main points that will be brought up about social mobility , are living conditions, power of wealth and education. It is ââ¬Å"a persons standing or importance in relation to other people within a society.â⬠( according to dictionary.com) The social status between the socs and the Greasers are different the socs are above middle class, otherwise known as the upper class. the social status of the Socs gives them the opportunity to get away with more things, for example, the Greasers would not get away as quickly then with the Socs. For the Greasers their social status is the bottom lower than middle class to. This inequality for the greasers and the socs are unfair the fact that the Greasers are in a lower class then the Greaser gives them a disadvantage for social mobility.Although it does not really talk about the middle class in the novel, Ponyboy does mention that he does not want his ââ¬Å" middle class ââ¬Å" friends to see his house. The social status for the middle class people and the Greasers does not have as much of a drastic kind of difference with t he Socs. I can relate that having money and no money is really hard. Now Perhaps More Than Ever, Schools Need To Develop Strong
Now perhaps more than ever, schools need to develop strong community relationships. With mounting pressure coming from all directions, schools can no longer afford to remain in the past. 21st Century schools need allies in the parent community. According to Dr. Joyce Epstein, director of the Center On School, Family and Community Partnership based at Johns Hopkins University, principals need to approach parent and community involvement the same way they do curriculum, professional development, and other areas critical to school life. ââ¬Å"There needs to be a systemization and planning and thinking for family and community involvementâ⬠¦ The old way of thinking was that parental involvement was all about parents. Three Values to a Better Country free essay sample
It is so outstanding because it is the only developed country in the Asia. It has many strongpoints which other countries should learn from it. However, just like an old English proverb saying-there is no perfect thing in the world. Even though Japan is a very strong country, it still has many aspects which should be improved. In my opinion, there are three values which would help make Japan a better country. They are open-minded, responsibility and humor. First is open-minded. Although Japan has been influenced a lot by western culture, most people still stick to the conservative concept-female should stay at home, not go outside to work. In 2007, Japans GEM(United Nations Development Programs Gender Empowerment Measure, which gauges equality by tracking womans participation in politics and business) was ranked 54th out of 93 countries. Japanese should be open-minded and encourage female to work. If female work, their talent and education can be best made use of. We will write a custom essay sample on Three Values to a Better Country or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page What is more, since males and females are complementary in many aspects, their cooperations with males can propel economic development more effectively. Second is responsibility. According to a survey conducted by Japanese Youth Institute, about 59. 7% American teenagers and 46. 9% Chinese teenagers can be responsible for themselves, but for Japanese teenagers, only 25. %. Because of the lack of responsibility, they do not care about anything, no matter their families or their country; when they meet problems, what they think is not how to solve them, but how to put off their liabilities. We can imagine what awful situation Japan will be if one day this generation takes over it. How can the people without responsibilities be able to develop a country? Therefore responsibility is a very important value if Japan wants to improve. The third one is humor. As we all know, Japan is a country with the highest suicide rate. There are very severe competitions in Japan and Japanese live in a fast-tempo lifestyle. Theyre under much pressure everyday and these pressure lead to suicide. So how to relieve pressure is very crucial. According to scientific research, humor can help people relax themselves, relieve their life pressures and keep their mental healthy. In short, humor can make people have a positive life attitude. Only when people are happy, can they contribute to countrys development. So humor is another value which would help make Japan a better country. When Japanese are more open-minded, they can improve themselves and develop their country; when more Japanese have responsibilities, their society can be more harmonious; when Japanese have more humor, their lives can be more interesting. All in all, if Japan wants to become a better country, open-minded, responsibility and humor would help make it.

Looking For A Reason Essay Research Paper free essay sample
Looking For A Reason Essay, Research Paper Looking for a Reason Is where you are in your working calling where you want to be for the remainder of your life? The reply to that inquiry is simple for Sammy in the narrative # 8220 ; A A ; P # 8221 ; by John Updike. Sammy, like many others in this universe, is a immature adult male seeking to do some money in a little town. But unlike some, he refuses to be stuck in the same occupation for many old ages or perchance the remainder of his life. One twenty-four hours while working the registry at a local food market shop, Sammy notices three misss walk in. The misss are have oning their bathing suits because the beach is near to the shop. When the misss reach the registry the director notices the misss garb. He walks over to them and argues with them for a minute and so misss leave. We will write a custom essay sample on Looking For A Reason Essay Research Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Sammy didn # 8217 ; T understand why the director had such a job with what the misss were have oning. Suddenly Sammy decides to discontinue. He takes off his apron and walks out the door. One of the things that caught my attending the most was Updike # 8217 ; s usage of imagination in depicting Sammy # 8217 ; s working environment. # 8220 ; The sheep forcing their carts down the aisle- # 8221 ; ( 34 ) , I thought, was an first-class representation of clients grocery shopping. I could about see them forcing their carts around the shop shopping for things. It seems to me that the clients are like sheep because they don # 8217 ; t truly care about what is traveling on around them. They merely want to acquire their things and travel on about their concern. Another good illustration is when Sammy is looking at the misss while they are standing in his aisle. He refers to one of the miss # 8217 ; s thorax as # 8220 ; two scoops of vanilla # 8221 ; ( 36 ) . I think this is an of import point because he doesn # 8217 ; t mention to an older / gt ; adult female, who was standing in line before the misss, in such a mode. This shows a male point of position that helps the reader understand how Sammy feels and what is traveling through his head during the narrative. I think the misss helped give Sammy a ground to discontinue the food market shop. On one manus, Sammy quit for the misss. He saw how they were treated by the director and idea he would be the hero by discontinuing to acquire back at him. And even though he knew the misss wouldn # 8217 ; t be waiting on him out side the shop, he quit none the less. Because on the other manus, he didn # 8217 ; t want to stop up like the director when he got older. I was looking for a ground to discontinue a occupation one time. I didn # 8217 ; t quit because I thought I was traveling to be working at that place for the remainder of my life, but because I didn # 8217 ; t like working at that place any longer. I decided to non travel in one twenty-four hours and when the director called I said I had a scientific discipline undertaking to make. When she asked if I was traveling to come in of all time once more I said no. That was a long clip ago and I would neer discontinue a occupation in that manner once more. I was immature so and I fundamentally was merely tired of working at that place. Sammy # 8217 ; s hereafter is unknown. The inquiry of conditions he quit because he thought he would be the misss knight in reflecting armour, or the fright that he would be stuck in a dead-end occupation the remainder of his life is left up to the reader. Maybe both of the replies are both true. I think even though he thought in the dorsum of his head that the misss would be outside waiting for him, he knew in his bosom that they wouldn # 8217 ; t be at that place. I don # 8217 ; t believe Sammy # 8217 ; s hereafter is in the food market shop concern though. One thing is certain though, Sammy # 8217 ; s hereafter is up to him. Mordecai Kaplanââ¬â¢s Judaism as a Civilization focuses on the reconstruction of the American-Jewish life that would help the Jewish to change their traditional way of life through incorporations of the modern way of life, philosophy, religion and science as it develops in the U.S. On the other hand, Abraham Joshua Heschelââ¬â¢s The Sabbath mainly focuses on the traditional way of lif e of the Jewish and Judaism and puts more emphasis on the Sabbath. Abraham Joshua views Judaism as a religion of time, which makes him focus on the past rather than the future. Kaplan in Judaism as a Civilization views Judaism as a religion that is evolved from the traditional world to the modern world. He refers to the Judaism as a religion that has been undergoing cultural differences depending on the times that we are living. He believed in Judaism but felt that it was necessary for the Judaism to unite with other religions to form a common religion that was civilized. On the other hand, Abraham Joshua laid more emphasis on the traditional mode of life for the Jewish. He claimed that the traditional mode of life in Judaism made the religion more spiritual and right with their God. In addition, he dealt with the traditional problems that were faced by the Judaism that he sought to find solutions. Abraham Joshua in his efforts to find solutions to the problems associated the proble ms faced by the Judaism with the modern life. This is a clear evidence that Abraham Joshua was against modernization. Further, Kaplan rejected various traditions that the Jewish practiced. He found that the practices that the Jewish had were outdated. He concentrated more on the issues that would help the Jewish realize their religion and the status of life in which they were living. He further believed that some of the aspects that were inherent in Judaism were wrong and needed to be changed. In his writing, Kaplan disagreed with the Jewish category of Closeness that made them feel more superior to other religions. In addition, Kaplan called for democracy in the synagogue, highly recommended membership to be voluntary, reconstruction of procedure of electing leaders and the individualsââ¬â¢ religion options respect. Kaplan believed in the time when individuals joined religion depending on their race and ancestral religionââ¬â¢s belief by force. Abraham Joshua believed that religion was an answer to human ultimate questions and thus religion had to be fully respected. He found that the alienation of modern man to religion was putting man into more threats. He therefore emphasized that the Jewish should leave modernity and embrace traditions that would make them more religious. Although they had differences, there were a few similarities. They both encouraged the unity of the Jewish and encouraged them to embrace each other as brothers and sisters. They further encouraged the Jewish to have Judaism as their religion and to have faith in God. In addition, the two emphasized on prayer, as they believed that it connects man to God. Views on Modern Society Kaplanââ¬â¢s concept of civilization was optimistic about the modern society. He believed that modern society including the Jewish had a future if only they would embrace civilization. He encouraged the Jewish to be patient and work towards meeting their goals as the Americans used to do. This gave the Jewish who read his books the ideology of the Americans who believed in hard work. Kaplan believed that with the improvement in science and technology, philosophy and culture, man had a chance to grow depending on the level of civilization he embraces. On the other hand, Heschelââ¬â¢s views on civilization were pessimistic. He viewed civilization, as a way to alienate modern man from religion that he believed was the answer to all human ultimate questions. He believed civilization of man would make him more venerable to threats that made him to oppose civilization in religion. Conclusion Judaism is a religion associated with the Jewishââ¬â¢ s who have origin in Israel. Their belief in God is strong and its what makes them more concrete with Him. Judaism as a religion embraces unity and peace but there are splits in relation to modernity. These kinds of differences have caused splits in other religions. The views between the two theologians negate each other and none can be used to complement the other as they have several differences based on civilization. However, on their reference to God the two views can supplement each other.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Compare and contrast Mordecai Kaplanââ¬â¢s Judaism as a Civilization and Abraham Joshua Heschelââ¬â¢s the Sabbath specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This essay on Compare and contrast Mordecai Kaplanââ¬â¢s Judaism as a Civilization and Abraham Joshua Heschelââ¬â¢s the Sabbath was written and submitted by user Kyndall C. to help you with your own studies. intelligentsia essays
intelligentsia essays The Intelligentsia within Russia began as early as December 14, 1825 when the Decembrists were put down at the hands of loyalist troops commanded by Nicholas I. From the tragedy that befell the Decembrists, a movement would spring forth that would strive for a Russia where justice and equality were rights to be had by all. After the Decembrists movement occurred, Nicholas severely punished or hung people involved with the movement. The movement for equality then went underground but was kept alive by writers of the period such as Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy. The writings of these authors were very influential upon a class of people that had not existed under Russian laws of the time. These people were known as raznochintsy, or people of other ranks. It was these people who formed the Intelligentsia. The Intelligentsia started radical because of Nicholas policies towards dissenters. Nicholas did not tolerate any ideas that were contrary to his own very well. This changed under Alexander II for a time. Alexander made many changes but progress slowed after an assassination attempt on him by a student named Karakozov. The reactions of the government after the attempt fueled the radicals actions. This was because many of the people who had benefited from reforms found the benefits cut off as a result of the reaction to the assassination. Within the Intelligentsia, there were two schools of thought on what goals the Intelligentsia should follow. The first movement was the Westernizers. This group believed that Russia should follow a course akin to the European states. The Westernizers believed in the Petrine reforms. The second movement was the Slavophiles. They believed in an appreciation of the peasantry and that they represented the core of Russia along with orthodoxy beliefs. The intelligentsia went on to accede to the radic ...

Criminal Justice (Probation and Parole) - Essay Example The social learning theory focuses on how behavior is learned from social experiences. Behavior is learned from oneââ¬â¢s own social environment. An act of deviance becomes a norm if it is accepted by the society that the individual lives in. A norm becomes a norm when it is socially accepted. In rehabilitation, social learning is important. It is needed in order to re-establish the norms that the individual has to live with. The social learning theory explains that behavior can be learned according to modeling and reinforcement. Strong predictors of criminal behavior is said to be linked to parent-child interaction as it serves as the model behavior of an individual. If the social environment of an individual strongly suggests violence as a norm, then the behavior of the individual will tend towards acts of violence. Thus, in rehabilitation, criminals are presented proper norms of behavior through models and examples that are adherent to the norms of the society. Norms and accept ed social values are presented to the criminals through socialization. In a rehabilitation program, these individuals are immersed in an environment where the rules are strongly structured to represent the parent-child interaction and social environment that will nurture positive values and behavior. Examples of programs that have relied upon the social learning theory are group therapies and peer programs. With this, it is believed that criminal behavior will be eliminated from the individualââ¬â¢s system. Another important aspect of rehabilitation is behavior modification. Behavior modification has its similarities with the social learning theory. This aims to modify the behavior of the criminal to re-establish proper behavior rather than deviant behavior. Rehabilitation aims to cure the criminal behavior through different processes such as social learning and behavior modification. It aims to modify or transform the criminal behavior into proper behavior that will be beneficial for the
